Bret Thornton – GWS Giants #46

Bret’s experience and leadership will be a huge asset for the young GWS team in 2013 after spending the first 11 years of his AFL career with Carlton.

Bret was selected by Carlton in the 2002 Rookie Draft at pick 10. After an excellent pre-season Bret was elevated onto the Senior List and made his debut in round 10 of the 2002 season against Fremantle. He went on to play 11 games in his first year and was rewarded by winning the award for best first year player at Carlton.

Bret was a mainstay in the Carlton defence for a number of years while the club went through a very tough period in the mid 2000′s. He was a member of Carlton 2005 and 2007 pre-season premiership sides and provided great leadership during the club’s struggles in the mid 2000′s.

Bret found a new lease of life in 2011 playing 20 games as both a defender and a forward kicking 13 goals for the year. Bret wasn’t afforded the opportunities he would have liked in 2012 and only managed 7 games for the year. After 188 games with Carlton Bret decided to look for opportunities elsewhere to continue his AFL career and ended up with the GWS Giants.
